Carmen Gatt Baldacchino was elected president of Friends of the Manoel, a non-profit association set up in 1986 with the aim of supporting the Manoel Theatre in building an audience and encouraging local talent in the pursuit of theatrical arts and broadening the repertoire.

“Since its inception, Friends of the Manoel has been supporting the theatre in various ways, including promoting its events and raising funds for various causes.

“These have included the purchase of a grand piano, fireproof curtains for the stage as well as sponsorship of events,” said Gatt Baldacchino.

The association organises monthly activities during the theatre season, including vocal and instrumental concerts with established performers and new talent, talks on composers and their music, educational tours and cultural and social activities.

Gatt Baldacchino has been a member of the Friends’ committee since 2001, responsible for coordinating activities. She became vice-president in 2006. The association currently has some 200 members.

The other members of the committee are vice-president Johann Tisch, secretary Cecilia Xuereb, treasurer Charles Falzon and members Margaret Tisch, Doris Camilleri and Silke Schermann.
