A student opened fire at a high school in Washington state yesterday, wounding an unknown number of victims before killing himself with a gun, the Seattle Times reported.

Local media reported that at least two people were wounded in the shooting at Marysville-Pilchuck High School north of Seattle and were being air-lifted to a local hospital.

The Seattle Times, citing two law-enforcement sources, said the suspected assailant was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to a Press Association release Marysville Police Commander Robb Lamoureux said the shooter was a student. A spokeswoman for the Marysville Police Department confirmed to Reuters that there had been a shooting at the school and that a “crisis was under way.” She declined to give any further information.

The Seattle Times said ambulances were staged around the school and that police were searching the campus room by room.

“The Marysville Pilchuck High School is currently in lockdown due to an emergency situation. Police and emergency services have responded,” the school district said in a message on its website. The district said students were being sent to a nearby church from where buses would take them home.

Live video late yesterday showed students being evacuated from Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Marysville, about 30 miles north of Seattle, Washington State. Local television station KIRO showed images of students walking away from school buildings, crossing a sports field with their hands in the air as officers with rifles ran across the school yard. A helicopter used to airlift patients to a local hospital landed at the school and took off, according to the TV station.

TV images also showed students gathered in a parking lot. The FBI in Seattle said the agency had sent personnel on the scene to help authorities.
