The European Popular Party will hold an extraordinary convention in Malta in the first half of 2017.

The announcement was made at the end of negotiations between leaders of the EPP attended by Opposition leader Simon Busuttil.

The convention will be attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Spanish Prime Minister Marinao Rajoy, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and prime ministers from other states including Poland, Portugal, Finland, Hungary, Latvia and Ireland.

In a statement, Dr Busuttil yesterday welcomed the decision to hold it in Malta, saying this would attract most European leaders at a time when the country would be at the helm of the EU presidency.
