No one was injured in a fire at a second storey guest room at the Solana Hotel in Borg Olivier Street, Mellieha at around 2.45pm.

However, a number of people had to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire was controlled within minutes by Solana maintenance staff, a spokeswoman for the management said.

The spokeswoman said all staff and guests were evacuated but the situation had returned to normal by 4.30pm.

The Civil Protection Department said in a statement that the fire probably started from a desk on which there was a television set and an electric kettle.

The CPD said the fire had already been controlled by the time they arrived at the hotel.

An inquiry is being held.
