The Majjistral Nature and History Park in the northwest of Malta (hence the name) is the country’s first natural national park.

Stretching from Golden Bay to il-Prajjet and ix-Xagħra l-Ħamra, it is home to many species of flora and fauna and thus it is of great importance to Malta’s ecology. Moreover, it features a number of historical, cultural and rural heritage sites.

Throughout summer, four students developed a mobile application for the park, hosted by the Mita Innovation Hub, a tech incubator funded by the Malta Information Technology Agency. The app is intended to act as a point of information to park visitors, as well as a fun guide for ramblers. It will be launched during an open day at the park on Saturday.

Following the launch, families, children, tourists, ramblers, orni-thologists and other enthusiasts can download the free mobile application, available on Android and iOS.

Activities start at noon. There will be a mobile photography competition using the mobile app, wherein one may send his photos through a special function. Prizes will be awarded to the best photos.

There will also be a treasure hunt, where participants can use the mobile app as an itinerary, as well as guided walks to explain in more detail what the park has to offer, as well as increase awareness about its rich heritage.

The creators of the app, designers Eliza Calleja and software developers Kurt Dalli, Nicholas Galea and James Zammit, will be present on the day to give a presentation about the invention and tell their story about their experience of running their own IT project from A to Z.

Keen nature or history enthusiasts, or simply anyone who wants to learn more about the Majjistral Nature and History Park, or seek a different and exciting way to spend a rambling Saturday afternoon, should not miss the event. But don’t forget your smartphone as could spoil a good part of the fun!
