The childhood terraced home of the late Beatles guitarist George Harrison sold at auction tonight for €197,000.

The property, at 25 Upton Green in the Speke area of Liverpool, was the musician’s home for a decade from 1949 after his parents Harold and Louise moved in following an 18-year spell on the council house waiting list.

The three-bedroom home was sold at the city’s Cavern Club by Countrywide Property Auctions, which last year handled the home of his bandmate John Lennon. The guide price was €125,000. The buyer was a Beatles fan from London.

Harrison was around five when he moved to the house and he had joined the line-up of The Quarrymen − later to become The Beatles − by the time the family moved to another home 10 years later.

By 1965, when Harrison and the band had achieved worldwide fame and success, he had bought his parents a home of their own in Appleton, near Warrington.

Stephen Giddins, the regional sales director of Merseyside-based selling agent Entwistle Green, said: “We are delighted for our client and the new buyers of 25 Upton Green, who have purchased such a unique property.”

Andrew Brown, managing director, Countrywide Property Auctions, said: “There was interest in the property before the auction from potential buyers who lived in the UK and internationally. We are delighted to have sold such an iconic piece of The Beatles and Liverpool’s history.”

Childhood homes of Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney at Mendips and 20 Forthlin Road in Liverpool have been acquired by the National Trust for fans to visit.
