Ex-prime minister Lawrence Gonzi yesterday denied he was ever in possession of documents that spoke of corruption in fuel procurement. He was reacting to comments made in Parliament by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo.

Dr Gonzi insisted he had never given any such documents to a security officer or given any instructions for anybody to do so.

But Mr Bartolo said Dr Gonzi was either playing with words or did not know the full facts.

Mr Bartolo said in 2011 somebody sent Dr Gonzi documents with information about corruption at Enemalta, which were delivered by a Security Service official.

Dr Gonzi did not even want to touch them and asked for an investigation, he added.

The documents were taken to the Security Service but instead of an investigation, they were referred to the secretariat of a ministry and some of the documents were destroyed, he said.

Dr Gonzi said he did not play with words like somebody else did, with clear reference to the Prime Minister.
