50 drivers have had their licences suspended this year because they went over the 12-point limit, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said.

He explained in reply to a parliamentary question that all new driving licences are being issued under the points system for the first three years of each licence,.

This system now affects 16,154 drivers.

Mr Mizzi recalled that on April 22 a Road Safety Strategy Document had been issued for public consultation. The document had proposed to extend the points system to all drivers in order to discourage repeated breaches of regulations and encourage regular training.

The measure was proposed to become fully effective in 10 years’ time.

The minister was replying to a question by Nationalist MP Censu Galea.
