A ruthless Bayern Munich scored five goals in the first 36 minutes on their way to an astonishing 7-1 Champions League win at Roma last night that left the home players and supporters shell-shocked.

Arjen Robben scored twice, while Mario Goetze, Robert Lewan-dowski and Thomas Mueller, from a penalty, also chipped in before half-time as the Bavarians exploited the many gaps left by the Roma defence in the Group E match.

Gervinho pulled one back for Roma after half-time only for further goals from substitute Franck Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri to give Bayern their biggest ever away win in Europe, while Roma equalled their heaviest ever defeat.

It was Bayern’s 12th match without defeat in all competitions and left them top of the group with nine points from three games, five clear of Roma. Manchester City have two points and CSKA Moscow one.

Robben opened the floodgates when he jinked inside Ashley Cole and effortlessly curled his shot past Morgan De Sanctis.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer stopped Gervinho’s shot two minutes later, preventing a goal that could have dramatically changed the course of the game, and from then on it was all Bayern.

Goetze exchanged passes with Mueller and wrong-footed De Sanctis from the edge of the area in the 24th minute, then Lewan-dowksi, unmarked, headed in Juan Bernat’s cross two minutes later with Roma coach Rudi Garcia in an apparent state of shock on the bench.

The goals kept coming as Robben got in behind Cole to fire the fourth on the half-hour and Mueller converted a penalty after a handball by Kostas Manolas six minutes later.

Roma were less submissive after half-time, and Gervinho, having hit the post and been denied again by Neuer, finally pulled one back in the 66th minute.

But Bayern were irresistible, and Ribery, having just come on, ran on to Robben’s through ball and chipped De Sanctis before Shaqiri completed the scoring from close range.

CSKA staged a stirring fightback to come from 2-0 down and earn a 2-2 draw against City in a clash played behind closed doors.

First-half goals from Sergio Aguero and James Milner put the visitors in command, but the Russian side fought back after the break, with Seydou Doumbia’s strike giving them a lifeline and Bebras Natcho’s 86th-minute penalty earning them a point.

Shakhtar records

Brazilian striker Luiz Adriano struck five times, becoming the first player in Champions League history to score four goals in the opening half, as Shakhtar Donetsk trounced BATE Borisov 7-0 in Group H.

On a record-breaking night, Luiz Adriano joined Barcelona’s Lionel Messi as the only players to hit five goals in a Champions League game.

Shakhtar’s 6-0 half-time lead also set a new record for Europe’s elite club competition.

The Ukrainians are now second in the group on five points, two behind leaders Porto who beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1.

Belarussians BATE are third with three points from three matches while Athletic have one.

Chelsea crushed Maribor 6-0 in a predictably one-sided Group G match at Stamford Bridge that saw Jose Mourinho’s side stretch their unbeaten run from the start of the season to 12 matches.

Veterans Didier Drogba, 36, who scored a penalty, and skipper John Terry, 33, were both on the scoresheet along with Loic Remy, Eden Hazard – who scored twice – and an own goal.

Remy opened the scoring after 13 minutes before Drogba doubled the lead from the penalty spot with his first goal since returning to the club. He had replaced Remy, who injured himself scoring.

Terry made it 3-0 after 31 minutes before Mitja Viler put through his own net to make it 4-0 nine minutes into the second half.

Agim Ibraimi then fired a Maribor penalty against the post before Hazard made it 5-0 with Chelsea’s second spot kick of the night.

Hazard added a superb stoppage-time sixth to complete the rout and leave Chelsea top of the group with seven points from three matches.

In the other Group G match, a stoppage-time penalty from Schalke’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting snatched a 4-3 win against Sporting for their first victory and a winning return to the competition for new coach Roberto Di Matteo.

In Spain, Neymar and Lionel Messi maintained their lethal partnership with a goal apiece as Barcelona swept aside Ajax 3-1 in Group F.

The Argentine was the provider, slipping the ball through for Neymar to hit the opener with a clinical finish into the corner after seven minutes, then he struck midway through the half to put the hosts in control.

Andres Iniesta threaded the ball through to the Argentine and his shot from the centre of the penalty area squirmed under keeper Jasper Cillessen.

Messi now has 69 Champions League goals, as does Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo with the duo two off all-time leading scorer Raul.

Anwar El Ghazi pulled back a late goal for Ajax before Sandro Ramirez settled any late jitters.

Edinson Cavani handed Paris St Germain a dramatic late 1-0 victory in Cyprus as APOEL were denied a hard-earned point.

The Uruguayan frontman struck in instinctive style with just three minutes remaining to break APOEL hearts on a night when the home side enjoyed the clearer opportunities with defender David Luiz having earlier cleared a Tiago Gomes header off the line.

But ultimately Cavani’s intervention was enough to keep PSG at the top of Group F ahead of Barca.
