Former Radio 1 DJ Mike Read has launched a bid for chart success with a song singing the praises of Ukip and its leader Nigel Farage.

The broadcaster’s Ukip Calypso, which includes the lyrics “when we take charge and the new prime minister is Farage”, is 50-1 to go straight into the charts at number one according to bookmakers Paddy Power.

Other lyrics, which Read sings in a mock Caribbean accent, include digs at the European Union such as “with the EU we must be on our mettle, want to change our lawnmowers and our kettles”.

Young... and downwardly mobile

The younger generation of workers are the most likely to lose their mobile device, according to new research, with half admitting they had dropped it down the toilet.

Fifty three per cent of those surveyed said they had damaged or broken a phone by spilling a drink on it, while 52 per cent of the 16-24 age bracket also said they’d had one stolen.

The survey of 1,500 full-time workers from around the world – commissioned by digital firm Oracle – found that those aged between 16 and 24 were the most likely to misplace or damage their device. Only 20 per cent in the 45-54 age bracket had been a victim of theft, while just 32 per cent had lost a phone.

Salisbury is a corker among cities

A historic British town has made it into a top 10 world cities list chosen by travel guide Lonely Planet.

According to Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2015, Salisbury is a “quintessentially English city” which this year “uncorks the champagne for the 800th anniversary of its greatest treasure, the Magna Carta”.

Slow start to drive-in funeral idea

Only a couple of families have taken advantage of a new service available at a funeral home in Saginaw, Michigan – drive-through viewings.

Paradise Funeral Chapel recently started offering the option, which allows mourners to pay their last respects on the go. It was designed in part to cater to those with physical limitations.

The funeral home’s president, Ivan Phillips, said he expects more customers to opt for the drive-through once they learn it is not a gimmick and is safe to use.

Curtains covering the window open when sensors underneath the pavement recognise the presence of a car. Mourners then get three minutes to view the body as music plays.

Cinema’s €20,000 hot dog howler

An Irish cinema may have just bought the world’s most expensive hot dog for an unfairly fired worker.

Ireland’s employment appeals court ordered Dublin’s Cineworld to pay Carl Meade €20,000 for sacking him over his illicit discount on a workplace snack.

Cineworld said it used surveillance footage to show Meade buying an extra-large hot dog, but only paying for a regular.

A three-judge panel found that the employer should have considered Meade’s contention that he had made an innocent mistake.
