Horse Racing: Connections of Japanese stayer Admire Rakti have confirmed the seven-year-old stallion will run in the $5.44m Melbourne Cup despite being penalised an extra half-kilogramme for winning the lead-up Caulfield Cup on Sunday. Owner Riichi Kondo told reporters after the win at Caulfield that he would consider pulling Admire Rakti from the 3,200 metre handicap if the horse were penalised. But organisers said they had received confirmation that Admire Rakti would start at Flemington Racecourse on November 4.

American Football: Denver quarter-back Peyton Manning broke Brett Favre’s National Football League record for career touchdown passes when he threw his 509th scoring pass during the second quarter of the Broncos’ game against San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Manning’s eight-yard pass was caught in the end zone by wide receiver Demaryius Thomas to eclipse the record of 508 regular season touchdowns Brett Favre set in 2010 while playing for Minnesota Vikings.

Rugby Union: New South Wales Waratahs coach Michael Cheika has agreed in principle to replace Ewen McKenzie in charge of the Australia team, The Australian reported citing “an informed source”. Cheika led the Waratahs to the Super Rugby last season, completing a unique coaching double after he guided Irish province Leinster to a Heineken Cup triumph in 2009. The report said Cheika was hoping to retain control at the Waratahs and combine that role with his duties as national coach in the lead-up to next year’s World Cup.
