A man died yesterday afternoon out at sea after he faced difficulties while swimming.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was spotted in trouble while swimming off Qui-Si-Sana, Sliema, around 2.20pm. A police constable and a passer-by tried to rescue him but their attempts were in vain.

The man was recovered by the army’s maritime squadron and soldiers gave him intensive CPR until he was brought to shore and taken to hospital in an ambulance.

The two men who tried to rescue him also received medical assistance on site.

Police are investigating. A magisterial inquiry is also under way.
