Sterling: Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed speculation linking him with a move for Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling. The 19-year-old, who has risen to prominence for both the Reds and England in the last 12 months, is yet to agree a new deal at Anfield and there have been suggestions that Los Blancos were keen to lure him to Spain. “Sterling is a player of great quality, certainly one of the best in Europe,” he told The Sun yesterday. “But we already have extraordinary talent here.”

Paderborn: Promoted Paderborn stunned Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 with three goals in 19 minutes yesterday to spoil their chance of moving into third place in the Bundesliga. Frankfurt captain Alex Meier drilled in a low shot off the post after a quick passing move for his fifth goal of the campaign in the 57th minute but that was their last attacking move. Substitute Marvin Ducksch’s first touch of the ball was a thundering left-footed shot from the edge of the box that drew the hosts level and captain Uwe Huenemeier put them ahead in the 79th. Another substitute, Stefan Kutschke, sealed their second away win of the campaign.

Gattuso: Panathinaikos’s stuttering start to the season continued yesterday as they were beaten 2-1 at home by OFI Crete, with Giorgos Makris scoring the winner in stoppage time. Gennaro Gattuso’s OFI team, who have also had a mixed start to the campaign, took a surprise lead in the 21st minute through Georgian midfielder Giorgi Merebashvili’s stunning volley, but Thedoris Tripotseris’s second half own goal gave the under-par hosts a lifeline. Makris, however, pounced to prod home a corner in the fourth minute of added time and clinch all three points.

Deportivo: Deportivo la Coruna moved off the bottom of the La Liga table after Toche sealed a 3-0 win to dent Valencia’s bright start to the season. Deportivo went ahead with a scrappy own-goal from a corner after the ball first came off Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi and then Jose Gaya on the line. Just before halftime a long punt downfield by Deportivo goalkeeper Fabricio found its way to Lucas Perez who finished clinically with an angled drive for their second. Toche then ran clear 10 minutes from time and slotted past keeper Yoel Rodriguez to wrap up a victory.
