Gudja United 4
Żurrieq 1

Gudja United were back to winning ways after brushing aside neighbouring rivals Żurrieq at the Centenary Stadium.

Joe Borg’s Gudja came into the match determined to pick all points after two successive draws and they were worthy winners after enjoying the better fare of possession throughout.

Żurrieq missed a golden opportunity to take the lead on 28 minutes when Joseph Ogunnupe released Aaron Agius who mishit the ball from an inviting position.

It was Gudja who drew first blood on the stroke of half-time when Mauro Brincat hit a first-timer that took a deflection off Stephen Wellman, giving no chance to Żurrieq keeper Jeremy Alden.

But Żurrieq drew level on 49 minutes when Ogunnupe lobbed the ball over Xerxen from an acute angle.

Żurrieq’s joy was short-lived, though, as Udo Nwoko managed to tap in a Brincat corner, after Alden had misjudged the cross.

Here Gudja took control of proceedings and on 70 minutes Adrian Carabott moved past three defenders but was then floored in the area by Raimi Bakare.

The referee pointed to the spot and Brincat converted the ensuing penalty.

More woes followed for Żurrieq as Miguel Attard was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

Gudja wrapped up the points in stoppage time when Carabott moved past Bakare before slotting the ball past Alden.
