Virtual reality is being touted as the next big thing, especially after the failure of 3D TV. Manufacturers across the world are building VR headsets to capture the market as it emerges and now Samsung want in on that action with their Samsung VR headset.

While other VR headsets come with their own screens built in, Samsung is doing it differently by using the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 as a screen.

According to a recent announcement, Samsung are working with Oculus, the developers of Rift, to build a headset to insert a Note 4 into. Two lenses with pull focus onto the screen to provide the visual experience. It’s a unique take on VR and one that may work.

We know the screen on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display that works at 2,560 x 1,440 pixels and is capable of 500ppi. That’s powerful enough to work with VR.

As far as we know right now, the headset will look like other VR headsets but will contain a removable cover on the front to take the Note 4. There will be comfort straps and a charging point. The lenses and straps will be adjustable.

Audio is managed by the phone too using 3D spatial sound. As far as we know, there are no stereo speakers in the headset itself. However, reviewers at IFA who managed to try it out said it worked well.

The Samsung VR headset is a great concept. The headset itself has been tentatively priced at around €160. However, apart from the headset, you will also need a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to run it. If you’re getting one anyway, then the headset is a small expense. If you’re not, this could cost you quite a bit.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is out this month, so we assume the Samsung VR headset will be out at some point after that.
