Today, the Malta Canoe Federation is holding its first Canoe Sport Festival in a bid to promote the sport as a way of fitness on our islands.

The event will take place on the waters outside the Sliema Strand part of the harbour from 9am onwards.

With a record entry of 140 participants, the federation will be showcasing kayak racing, surfskis, sea kayaking, Stand up Paddling and canoe polo. On the day, the MCF will also launch its newest discipline – Dragon Boating.

The programme of events this morning gets underway with a team event race round Manoel Island.

The main event will be a Dragon boat tournament where an impressive 22-paddler team per boat will be battling it out over a 200m distance.

During the festival there will be various demos as well as a display canoe polo match.

These will be followed by a sprint race for juniors, some of whom will be representing Malta in an international regatta in Cyprus later this month.

The public is encouraged to attend. Information about the various categories of the sport will be handed out during the Canoe Sport Festival today.
