The University’s Faculty of Science is setting up a science zone at the Discover University open day on October 26 from 10am to 5pm to mark the faculty’s centenary.

Experts from the Physics Department will answer questions such as ‘What is Science?’ and ‘What can it teach us about the world?’

The science stand will demonstrate seemingly simple concepts that feature in everyday life and show what happens in the extreme.

Under the theme ‘From Breaking Bad to Breaking Everything’ presentations by the Department of Chemistry will aim to demystify the topic and display the wonders of chemistry, with the help of brilliant colours and powerful explosions, in order to explain some basic concepts of the subject, in a fun and easy way.

The Department of Biology is organising a botanical tour around the University conducted by biologist Sandro Lanfranco. The meeting point is by the Biology stand at 12.45pm.

The Science Student Society will conduct DIY Science – a series of hands-on and simple experiments in which visitors can participate.

The Faculty of Medicine and Surgery is also preparing a series of activities in the Pavilion Atriju Vassalli on open day. Body Parts is an exhibition of teaching specimens set up by the University’s Department of Anatomy to teach anatomy to medical students. These specimens are made by converting into plastic real specimens of the human body after preservation. The specimens can therefore be examined quite harmlessly by the public and used for public health education.

The Malta Medical Students’ Association will offer health checks to visitors from 11am to 5pm, including blood pressure, blood glucose and body mass index levels.

A fun run/walk/relay around the University ring road in aid of Hospice Malta will start at 11am from the University athletics track. There is a choice between a five- or two-kilometre fun run/walk, a five-kilometre relay and a 800-metre children’s fun run.

Thos wishing to take part are urged to apply by tomorrow to qualify for a medal and goody bag on the day. Late registrations at the venue will be accepted until 30 minutes before each event. Participation in the five-kilometre fun run counts as one hour for the Degreeplus sport and adventure credit.

As a prelude to the open day, a 90-minute live concert entitled ‘Groovy tunes – the journey’ will take place on Saturday at 8.30pm in the University’s Sir Temi Zammit hall on the Msida main campus.

The Brass House Unit, under the direction of trumpeteer Kevin Abela, will take the audience on a musical journey from the soul of the 1960s to the groovy sounds of today, with a crossover of artists such as James Brown Tower of Power, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Corona, Zucchero, Bruno Mars and Daft Punk.

The band includes Ivan Borg, Mat McKay, Daniel Quattromani and Godfrey Mifsud on saxophone, Kevin Abela and Reno Cassar on trumpet, Jonathan Abela, Aurelio Belli and Joseph Borg on trombone, Simon Fenech on piano and keyboards, Jonathan Ellul on acoustic and lead guitar, James Micallef on bass, Melchior Busuttil on drums, Kristian Schembri on percussion, and will be accompanied by singers Gloriana Arpa Belli, Petra Micallef and Sean Borg.

Entrance is free but on a first-come-first-served basis since places are limited. To reserve a seat e-mail discoveruniversity@um.edu.mt.
