Up to a few years ago, when there was only one landline service for the whole of Malta, a telephone directory used to be issued every two or three years.

Then the service provider was privatised, other companies entered the fray and the directory stopped being published.

Now, one can only use such directory if one has a computer and internet connection.

The companies running the telephone systems are making a profit from their subscribers but, in return, they are giving them a weaker service.

A few days ago, a new and updated Yellow Pages was issued. This happens every year and every household in Malta is provided with one free of charge.

The income comes from advertisers who, being aware of its wide distribution, willingly pay the rates necessary to produce it.

I suggest that both landline and mobile telephony companies come together and print a comprehensive directory for their clients.

Such a venture can be updated every two or three years instead of each year.

I would be interested to know how other local telephone users view the issue.
