Kimi Raikkonen has dropped a hint he may carry on at Ferrari for one more season beyond his current contract before retiring from Formula One for good.

On his return to Ferrari this season Raikkonen has endured a wretched campaign as the switch to the 1.6-litre V6 turbo-charged power units has resulted in changes to the car far from his liking.

As such, the 34-year-old Finn has qualified no higher than fifth and finished no higher than fourth in a race, and is currently 94 points adrift of team-mate Fernando Alonso.

With much of the attention on Alonso’s future, as the Spaniard is to leave Ferrari at the end of this season to be replaced by Sebastian Vettel, Raikkonen has slipped under the radar.

Many observers expect 2015 to be Raikkonen’s final campaign as he sees out the initial two-year contract he signed with Ferrari.

But he has suggested 2016 may now be his swansong as he said: “I have a contract for next year, and probably for one more year.

“But I’m not a young guy any more. I want to do something more with my life than just Formula One.”

Speaking to CNN, Raikkonen added: “I will finish my career in Ferrari. I never lost the passion. I will stop the day when I feel I don’t enjoy it any more.”

During a two-year sabbatical away from F1 after he initially quit the sport at the end of 2009, Raikkonen competed primarily in rallying and dabbled with NASCAR.

Raikkonen is keen to try his hand at both again, adding: “I really enjoy the whole NASCAR thing.

“It’s just completely different and fun. It was a good experience.

“Hopefully I can do more (races) some day, and I’ve said I’d like to do some more rallies in the future.”
