The Nationalist Opposition has once again called onto the government to come clean on its energy projects and publish all contracts signed on the new gas power plant and the deal with the Chinese for the sale of the Delimara power station.

Addressing a press conference in front of the Marsa power plant, PN deputy leader Mario Demarco said it was not acceptable that the government had not yet published the contract signed with ElectroGas.

He said the government was obliged to state what deals it was doing and when would the new power plant be working.

He said that now that the Prime Minister had admitted that it would not be possible to keep to his word and have the new power station ready by next March, he should at least state when it would be ready and how, in the meantime, he would be financing the reduction in the power tariffs.

The public, he said, had the right to know.

In view of Monday’s parliamentary debate on the new power station, Dr de Marco appealed to the government to publish all the relevant contracts for the sake of transparency.

The press conference was also addressed by PN spokesmen George Pullicino and Ryan Callus.

Meanwhile, in a statement the government said the people were noting the difference between the government’s positive work in the sector and the Opposition’s negative attitude trying to turn everything into a politically partisan matter.

The government inherited a sector that was neglected, a corporation that was burdened with debt, electricity generation that depended on the most polluting oil and the highest water and energy tariffs.

In a year and a half, it managed to turn the sector bringing about a reduction in tariffs with the help of a strategic partner from the world’s second biggest economy and aimed at eliminating the use of heavy fuel oil.

Discussions between Shanghai Electric Power and the government were now in the final stages and the government had already declared that once these were concluded it would give more details.
