A 41-year-old man from Sudan was this morning jailed for six-and-half years after pleading guilty to being in possession of five sachets of cannabis that he was prepared and ready to traffic.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras jailed Peter George after hearing how the sachets found in his possession had almost the same weight, indicating that they were ready to be sold.

The sachets weighed 0.67 grams, 0.71 grams, 0.81 grams, 0.81 grams and 0.55 grams. Police from the Drug Squad also found a crusher and other drug paraphernalia at his house in Msida.

Magistrate Galea Sciberras said the accused only pleaded guilty to the crime after the prosecution had rested its case so ruled that he should not benefit from a reduction in his sentence.

She therefore jailed him and fined him €700, also ordering him to pay just under €500 in court expenses.

Police Inspector Gabriel Micallef prosecuted.
