Transport Malta will be paying the General Workers’ Union €490,000 a year to rent offices at the A3 Tower block in Paola, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi told Parliament.

The authority is expected to transfer its offices to the high-rise block in the second half of next year after renting two floors owned by a subsidiary company of the GWU.

Mr Mizzi said Paola Estates, wholly owned by the GWU, was selected after a request for proposals was issued earlier this year.

Answering questions by Opposition transport spokesman Toni Bezzina, the minister said no rent had been paid yet. The GWU bought the two floors and underlying basement levels for almost €2 million in 2010.
