It has been reported that architect Antonio Belvedere, from Renzo Piano’s office, and Richard England made a case for transforming Valletta’s ditch into a garden as originally planned rather than a parking area. They also insisted that the bus terminus should be moved. As if not enough damage has been caused! As if the common passenger has not already suffered enough.

One of the bloggers, George Farrugia, suggested “that both the gardens and the parking area could be combined, say a two-storey parking area with a landscaped garden on top. Is this rocket science or what? The height of the ditch can surely comfortably take more than two storeys. And people looking from above would not be the wiser.”

I agree with Mr Farrugia, but in Malta, unless the idea is originated by some famous name, it will not be good enough for the snobs.

Let us not use partisan politics in favour or against. One must remember that contrary to other major towns, Malta does not have an underground railway system. The bus terminus must remain within easy reach of City “Gate”.

With an aging population, it is imperative to seek what is essential for the average passenger.

In the past we have been bombarded by harebrained ideas, such as moving the fountain, having a high tower instead of the Statue of Christ the King, having an underground bus terminus, and many others. Where do these experts want to put the bus terminus, outside Portes des Bombes, or is that not far enough?
