The work of refurbishment in the very heart of Victoria is progressing speedily. After Sabina Square it will soon be the turn of Independence Square (It-Tokk).

I asked and asked about the fate of the old trees that adorn this square but no one seems to know about their future. There is a certain mystery that surrounds them!

In the meantime an artistic impression was placed in the square that shows that these trees are going to be replaced by smaller ones in pots. These pots will undoubtedly become bins and ashtrays.

These trees have been part of the Tokk landscape for decades as can be seen in this picture from about 1920. It would be a pity if they were to be taken down after so many years of service, and when they are still healthy and full of life.

They provide shade and home to the birds! They are part and parcel of our urban environment. If the bird droppings are a nuisance, then all that needs to be done is to keep them regularly trimmed in such a way that will limit the number of birds that can seek refuge there. Daily cleaning of the square should look after any remaining dirt.

So, I beg all those concerned – Mepa, Minister for Gozo, the mayor and council, Wirt Għawdex, Heritage Malta and all those groups in favour of our environment – to spare these old trees which have now become a landmark.

I noticed many places in Malta and Gozo, including Pjazza Regina in Valletta, that were paved without touching the trees. These trees are beautifully trimmed every now and then.
