The Foreign Ministry has expressed its satisfaction at UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon's visit to Tripoli yesterday.

In a statement, the ministry congratulated Mr Ban for the visit during which he met with parliamentary and political leaders in Libya urging them to arrive at a negotiated settlement of the crisis and avoid more humanitarian misery. The visit followed the talks in Ghadames last month.

On this occasion, Malta was represented by its special envoy to Libya Joseph Mangion and the Maltese Ambassador to Libya Mannie Galea.

The ministry said that Mr Ban's visit reaffirmed the determination of the international community to find a lasting and comprehensive solution to the Libya crisis.

The Maltese government believed the international community should remain united and work incessantly towards a solution to the crisis under the aegis of the United Nations, the ministry said.

It said the United Nations had the ability and capacity to lead an all inclusive political dialogue that brought the warring parties around the negotiating table.
