Promotion seekers Gżira United registered their second win on the trot after coming from behind to beat St George’s and join Gudja on ten points at the top of the table.

It was St George’s who created the first chance when a Gabriel Okechukwu free-kick took a deflection that almost deceived goalkeeper Anthony Curmi.

Gżira hit back with a Gianluca Calabretta drive that was stopped by Thomas Galea as the Saints replied with a Brandon Muscat run down the left and a cross that reached Larsson Mallia whose shot was blocked.

The Maroons forged ahead a minute later. Moises Avila Perez was sent through by Anthony Ewurum before shooting home past Galea.

St George’s should have equalised just before the break when Noah Ojuola and Okechhukwu combined perfectly but the latter shot wide from a good position.

The Saints, however, levelled matters on 47 minutes when Anthony Bonello’s shot was blocked, the ball ran into the path of Ojuola who hit first time into the Gżira net.

On 58 minutes, St George’s took the lead thanks to Okechukwu who sprinted past two opponents before ramming the ball home.

Patrick Curmi’s side almost scored a third when an Emerson Amaira header from a free-kick finished just over the bar.

But Gżira regrouped and drew level 19 minutes from time as Galea ran out of position and Steve Meilak was on the right spot to hit home from outside the Saints box.

Then, Gabriel Aquilina struck the winner for the Maroons after receiving from Shennowo before placing the ball beyond the keeper’s reach.
