Nerea Pérez, niece of winemaker Raul Pérez, died last month after suffocating on gasses in the family winery at the Spanish village of Salas de Los Barrios.

According to police Nerea, 25, fainted while inspecting a wine vat during fermentation and suffocated after falling in.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but could only retrieve her body, which was reportedly found by her uncle. Members of her family who were overcome by grief at hearing the news of her death also had to be helped by the emergency crews.

Pérez was said to be a leading political figure in the nearby town of Ponferrada. It is believed that the 25-year-old was overcome by the fumes given off during fermentation and lost her balance and fell in while watching the process. It’s an accident that is more common than people may think, because of the natural gases given off while the liquid goes through the fermentation process, changing from a non-alcoholic grape juice into an alcoholic wine.
