The former Ta' Qali airfield saw its first aircraft take-off today since the 1970s.

A vintage Tiger Moth, restored and displayed at the Aviation Museum, took off for Luqa where is will be prepared for displays it will give this weekend as part of the Mdina grand prix.

The vintage bi-plane, used as a trainer in the 1930s, had previously only landed at Ta' Qali.

The take-off was made from a section of the old runway which is now used partly by the Model Aircraft Association and partly as a car park by the MFCC.

The aircraft will perform displays over Mtarfa Valley on Saturday and Sunday between 12.30 and 1 p.m.

It is expected to be flown back to Ta' Qali on Monday.

The last time that an aircraft took off from Ta' Qali was in the early 1970s when a Libyan aircraft bound for Luqa touched down there by mistake, and immediately took off again. At the time the airfield had already been closed for several years.
