My wife and I have been coming to Malta annually since 2005. We love your island, the people, the landscape, the history. But one thing spoils it. We have noticed over the years a steady increase in the amount of rubbish – plastic bags, bottles, cans and more – that now litter the sides of all roads, walking paths and picnic areas.

To visitors this might indicate a lack of pride of the Maltese in their island. We know this is not true.

The solution is that, when out and about, one should take all empties and other rubbish one has accumulated home, for disposal there. It would also help if more rubbish bins were put in public places – provided they are emptied on a regular basis.

Given the importance of visitors and tourism to Malta’s economy, we hope those in authority will act promptly to correct the situation before it gets even worse.

Meanwhile we look forward to being here again next year.
