The number of injuries from diving off the cliffs in Comino declined this summer, as a campaign to deter such diving paid off.

The Emergency Response and Rescue Corps (ERRC) said its lifeguards made 1,579 interventions during their service in the Blue Lagoon, Ramla and Marsalforn.

The service ended at the end of September.

The most common injuries were jellyfish stings.

The ERRC said there was a decline in spinal injuries at the Blue Lagoon, but a sharp increase in panicked and tired swimmers (usually people trying to cross the lagoon).

In Ramla Bay, a mother and son were rescued in the last day of lifeguarding duty in the last weekend of September.

The ERRC was given financial support by the Malta Tourist Authority, Gaia Foundation and the Ministry for Gozo. Support was also provided by Mgarr Marina, Transport Malta, Armed Forces of Malta, Police and the Civil Protection Department.
