I refer to Carmel Baldacchino’s interesting article that was entitled ‘The glory of the old Empire Sports Ground’ (September 18).

I feel it is only just and fair to point out that all the glory and merit for the enterprising and foresighted developments of the Empire Sports Ground and Empire Stadium should go to the hard endeavours of my beloved late father, Carmelo Scicluna, affectionately known and remembered as is-Sur Meme.

My father was a great entrepreneur and philanthropist. During World War II, he gave service to the country, first as a protection officer in Gżira and later as a regional protection officer for Sliema and the surrounding towns and villages.

In 1945, he featured in the annual Queen’s honours list after having been awarded the title of ‘Officer of the Order of the British Empire’ (OBE). This honour was bestowed as a token to his contribution to sports in Malta and the island’s social life.

In 1948, he was elected as the first president of the Mount Carmel Band Club in Gżira.

Fifty years after his passing away, in December 2002, a portrait bust of my father was erected in his memory in a prominent square in Gżira, which had been named after him as ‘Pjazza Mune Scicluna’. In 2003, he was posthumously honoured by the Malta Olympic Committee through commemorating and installing his name in the prestigious Hall of Fame.

On December 2, 1952, my father passed away: gone but never forgotten for his remarkable and charitable achievements during his lifetime.
