Ryanair has called time on its calendar of cabin crew in bikinis, according to reports.

The low-fare airline’s chief executive Michael O’Leary told Irish radio station Today FM that the calendar, which has raised money for charity, will not be published for next year.

The calendars were first published in 2008, with adverts for the product being banned in Malaga in Spain last year for being “discriminatory”.

The UK’s Advertising Standards Agency also said “sexually suggestive” adverts featuring women in underwear to publicise the airline’s 2012 calendar were likely to cause “widespread offence”.

A Ryanair spokesman said: “We are finalising our charity options for 2015 which will be unveiled soon.”

Mr O’Leary said the idea for the calendars came from Ryanair staff.

He told news website AOL: “I think it was a great idea by the cabin crew. It genuinely did raise huge amounts of money for charity and we will struggle to replace it with something as good or as successful.”

Meanwhile, Ryanair announced on Thursday that it carried 8.5 million passengers last month: a five per cent increase on the figure for September 2013.

A total of 83.8 million passengers travelled with the Irish carrier in the 12 months ending in September, a four per cent rise on the total for the 12 months ending in September last year.
