Independence Day came and went. In Gozo, flags could be seen on roofs, we sang the national anthem after Mass and lit up the facades of our churches.

In a nutshell, we did our part, but surprisingly nothing was done by the authorities so that we Gozitans could at least taste a little of what was done in Malta to celebrate 50 years of independence. To our dismay we were completely forgotten.

Sometimes, I feel that we, the Gozitans, are treated as second class citizens. This particular case was proof enough. Everyone is witness to what I am saying.

Gozo is thought of only when election time is nearing and politicians need our vote. By the way, where are our representatives in Parliament?

Didn’t they realise Gozo is part of the Maltese Islands? Independence was gained for us all (Maltese and Gozitans alike) and not for part of the population only.

Didn’t our politicians realise that some celebrations should have been held in Gozo? Is it possible that the foundation organising the festivities completely forgot that Gozo exists?

Gozitans are very upset about Gozo being left out of these festivities.

Let us hope that now that September 21 is gone, no one will attempt to make us believe we were an integral part of the programme, because we were not.
