The Malta Tourism Authority is launching the Quality Assured (QA) seal for licensed restaurants on Thursday.

The QA seal aims to be an objective way to recognise restaurants for high standards, making it possible for tourists and locals to make an informed decision about where best to eat.

The criteria of the quality seal were developed following research and consultation with the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA), the industry and Visit Scotland national tourism agency.

It goes beyond a mere food quality label, as service, hospitality, ambience, value for money, availability of information and customer feedback are all taken into consideration.

The European Tourism Quality Principles were also factored in when designing this scheme.

This quality recognition will not be enforcing restrictive criteria that promote a formal dining experience or style.

The seal goes beyond a mere food quality label

Different styles of restaurants having different average spends will be eligible for the seal.

Assessment of quality will take account of the standards and expectations appropriate to the particular type of restaurant. Part of the assessment will be carried out through a mystery-guest visit and the MTA will ensure that all third party assessors are fit for the purpose and trained to carry out such visits.

To this effect, the MTA has roped in Visit Scotland, which operates a similar scheme, to carry out specific training.

The seal will be awarded once the QA monitoring committee receives and approves the assessor’s report.

It will have a two-year lifespan and the establishment will be revisited by a mystery guest and assessed after the first 12 months to ensure that good management, standard of food quality, service and hospitality are maintained.
