So it’s Notte Bianca once again! Is it the seventh or the eight edition? Whatever the answer, the powers-that-be, despite the expert advice being given year in and year out by so many who have so much at heart the language of their country, haven’t yet changed the name of this now annual activity.

Why do we have to copy other countries all the time? Isn’t it enough that we took the cue from neighbouring Italy and invested in such an evening? The least we could have done was to come up with a Maltese name, one that is so beautifully-sounding as well as appealing at the same time. One that, besides displaying onomatopaeic qualities, epitomises the evening straightaway.

Now, let me say this from the very outset. I love the Italian language, its literature and its art, but I also love Maltese, our language.

I have always thought of Lejla Mdawla (an illuminated evening/night) as the best option, not only because the two weak consonants, w and j, imbue the term with such musical qualities, but more, because the expression is feminine, a quality that is synonymous with the romanticism the activity carries. Let us drop Notte Bianca altogether! Let us simply do it, not to backpedal and eat humble pie, but because of pride for our language, and love for originality.

Imagine being stopped by an English-speaking foreigner and asked the meaning of the Maltese term. I would be so proud to explain, and I am sure he will be all ears to listen. Now I believe, that is what selling our product really means. On the other hand, if we had to retain the Italian version, wouldn’t it be humiliating having to tell the same foreigner that the term is not Maltese at all?

Sometimes I wonder how these patriotic thoughts don’t cross the mind of those whose expertise has been sought to organise these events. I’m sure that so much effort is put in, but perhaps the only ideals sought focus purely on variety and popularity.

Already a lot of work and devotion are being channelled into V18. Let us hope no stone will be left unturned to make of it an unforgettable experience that truly reflects our Maltese traits.
