A couple was this afternoon charged with the theft of several items from a residence in Rabat, including a tablet and an air-conditioning unit.

Charles Spiteri, 50, from Bormla and Catherine Spiteri, 49, from Zabbar, pleaded not guilty to the theft that took place on September 1 and to being in possession of stolen goods.

Mr Spiteri, a drug addict, was further charged with theft of several items from a garage in Rabat on October 1, breaching the conditions of a previous release and relapsing.

He was remanded in custody while the woman was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €1,500.

Police inspectors Robert Vella and Sarah Magri prosecuted while lawyers Franco Debono and Angie Muscat appeared for the couple.
