Last weekend, Rodmar Pulis and Kieran Mifsud, from the Malta Weightlifting Association, competed in the seventh edition of the Vladan Mihajlovic Tournament in Indjija, Serbia.

Lifters from Bulgaria, Turkey, Hungary, Israel, Slovenia, Slovakia, Bosnia and host country Serbia took part in the tournament.

Pulis started off with a successful 102kg Snatch lift. In the second phase of the competition, he lifted 130kg in his first Clean and Jerk attempt and 135kg in his second.

But, Pulis missed out on his third and final 140kg attempt which would have meant a higher placing for the country in the rankings as well as a new record.

With a total of 292 points, however, Pulis still finished higher than lifters from Israel and Turkey in the final classification in Indjija.

Mifsud, the youngest lifter in the tournament at 15 years of age, was unlucky as he was forced to withdraw following an injury.

Having performed his Snatch attempt of 95kg with relative ease, a forearm strain, after a convincing first Clean and Jerk of 127kg, cut short his participation.

In Serbia, the Maltese association was also represented by top official Jesmond Caruana.

He was selected to carry out technical official duties as president of the jury in the women’s competition.

Meanwhile, Malta Weightlifting Federation official Stephen Borg has participated in the European Union Weightlifting congress.

During the meeting, he was nominated as technical controller for a competition held in Split, Croatia.
