Floriana have signed new players to improve their chances of challenging for the main honours in the 2014/15 basketball season which gets underway on Saturday.

Besides the new additions to their squad, the Greens have also secured a financial boost in the shape of a one-year sponsorship agreement with Café del Mar, which forms part of the Malta National Aquarium Complex.

During a press conference, Ian Mercieca, the president of Floriana BC, thanked the Café del Mar management for supporting the club, adding that the deal was crucial in helping the committee put together the best squad possible for the forthcoming season.

Floriana’s new players are Nikola Vasovic, who has signed a three-year contract after seven seasons with Luxol, Nigel Sultana, a member of the Malta team that won a silver medal at this year’s Small Nations Championships, Marco Mercieca, who has won several honours with Luxol, Lee Ross, who impressed for Siġġiewi last season, and American player Jules Montgomery.

Montgomery, 23, graduated from the Prairie View A&M University. He made two consecutive SWAC championship appearances and was also named the SWAC pre-season defence player of the year.

While welcoming the new players to the club, Mercieca thanked vice-president Ed-ward Torpiano for his sterling work and Salvu Ellul, of Café del Mar.
