The third SmartCity Malta Road Race Series, held recently by St Patrick’s Athletics Club at the picturesque seaside villages of Kal-kara and Xgħajra, attracted no fewer than 130 runners for the 8km event and walkathon.

They were joined by 25 young hopefuls who participated in the 2km race for juniors, making it a busy day for the organisers who ran both events without a hitch.

First to cross the line in the men’s category was Ibrahim Hussen Ahmed. The St Patrick’s runner made it home in a time of 26 minutes and 23 seconds.

He was followed by Jonathan Balzan, also of St Patrick’s, and Pembroke Athleta’s Brian Magri.

The first runner in the women’s race was Carmen Hili (St Patrick’s AC). Her winning time was 31 minutes and 41 seconds.

Josianne Attard Pulis, of Starmax, was second and Birkirkara St Joseph runner Sandra Schembri was third.

Martha Spiteri (8:12) and Dean Ellul (8:21) were the winners of the race for juniors.

Spiteri (Żurrieq Wolves) beat the challenge of Maria Ghigo (St Patrick’s) and Pamela Camilleri (Gozo Greyhounds) while Ellul raced home ahead of Matthew Camilleri (Gozo Greyhounds) and Roderick Cassar (St Patrick’s).

The official sponsors of the races were SmartCity, Nestlé Fitness, Crix, Gioia Bananas, Raysun, Gatorade, Nutrend and Kee Klamp.
