Swimming: Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps (picture) was arrested for drunken driving yesterday after spee-ding and then crossing the double-lane lines inside the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, Maryland Transportation Authority Police said. Phelps was clocked by radar at around 1:40 a.m. traveling 84 mph in a 45 mph zone, police said. The 18-time Olympic gold medalist was booked and released. Police said Phelps was “unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests,” adding that the Baltimore native was cooperative “throughout the process.”

Tennis: Local wildcard Tatsuma Ito claimed the biggest win of his career when he ousted top seed and world number four Stan Wawrinka 7-5 6-2 in the first round of the Japan Open yesterday. The world number 103 sealed the stunning victory on his second match point, blasting a backhand volley into an open court after his wide serve had forced Wawrinka out of position. The Australian Open winner struggled throughout the contest at the ATP 500 event, dropping serve four times and hitting 25 unforced errors in his first tour event since losing to Ito’s compatriot Kei Nishi-kori at the US Open last month.

Basket, NBA: Phoenix Suns signed forwards Marcus Morris and Markieff Morris to multi-year contract extensions reportedly worth a combined $52 million for the twin brothers. Multiple media outlets reported that Markieff Morris will receive a four-year deal worth $32 million while Marcus Morris will get a four-year deal worth $20 million.

Cycling: Team Sky has announced the signing of Irishman Nicolas Roche as one of five new names for 2015. The 30-year-old is joined at the British squad by Scot Andrew Fenn, Czech Leopold Konig, Dutchman Wout Poels and Lars Petter Nordhaug, who has re-signed for Team Sky after two years away. Roche’s signing is significant as it strengthens Chris Froome’s support for the 2015 Tour de France, while simultaneously weakening Alberto Contador’s squad as the Irishman was previously at Tinkoff-Saxo.

Rugby Union: England international Andrew Sheridan has retired from rugby with immediate effect. The 34-year-old former England and British and Irish Lions prop has failed to recover from a neck injury suffered last season which required surgery in February. The Toulon forward won 40 England caps, including starting the 2007 World Cup final against South Africa in Paris.

WTA Tour finals: Recently retired Chinese tennis trailblazer Li Na, Asia’s only grand slam singles winner, has been appointed as an ambassador for this month’s season ending WTA Tour Finals in Singapore. The 32-year-old was in position to qualify for the lucrative Oct. 17-26 tournament before announcing she was quitting a fortnight ago after being worn down by the effects of long-term knee injuries. This year’s Australian Open winner and the 2011 French Open champion will take on her new role for the first two editions of the event.
