The management of Majjistral Park condemned the recent increase in the illegal taking of government land within the boundaries of the Majjistral Nature and History Park for trapping purposes.

In a statement it said that a number of these sites are sited on ecologically sensitive causing irreparable harm and long term damage.

“Land clearing can have negative impacts on species present in the area, thus disrupting the natural regeneration of the site and important plant species that inhabit the park. “

The Majjistral Nature and History Park forms part of the Natura 2000 sites of ecological importance and hosts over 14 endemic plant species.

It is situated in Mellieħa and stretches from Golden Bay to Anchor Bay. The park was inaugurated in 2008 and is managed by the Heritage Parks Federation and NGO made up of Nature Trust Malta, Din l-Art Ħelwa and Gaia Foundation.

The management works closely with a government appointed management board made up of representatives from the MSCED, Mepa, Lands Department, and Mellieħa council. The management board is chaired by Carmen Sammut.
