The Masters Championship, kicking off this month, will see the participation of seven teams, three more than last season.

These are Żurrieq Wolves, Mqabba Masters, Rabat Boys, Attard, Sliema, Mosta Shaggy Pub and Bank of Valletta.

Details about this season’s competitions for veteran players (over 35 years) were given by Mario Meli, president of Masters Football Malta, during a news conference held recently.

“Interest in Masters competitions is increasing and we are in the process of applying for affiliation with the Malta Football Association as well as with an overseas body, possibly the English association,” Meli said.

The Masters Championship, sponsored by MSV Life, is scheduled to begin towards the end of this month and runs until April. It will be followed by the knock-out competition, which has the backing of L’Aroma Restaurant.

Meli thanked Norman Mifsud, from MSV Life, and Mario Pisani, of L’Aroma Restaurant, for their support.

Masters Championship mat-ches will be played on Thursdays at the Attard Ground. The first fixture of the evening will start at 7pm.

Meli said the organisers have abandoned the idea of bringing a foreign team to promote Masters football in Malta due to the high costs involved.
