Earlier this month, Mark Gatt travelled to the UK to participate in the Woking Seniors Tennis Championships.

In the singles quarter-finals, Gatt beat Richard Freeman, of Great Britain, 6-2 6-4. The Maltese player met another British player, Christopher Roberts, ranked no.161 in the semi-finals.

Gatt needed to win this match to defend the 30 ranking points he had gained last year at Woking. This he did in emphatic fashion as Gatt beat Roberts without dropping a game, 6-0 6-0.

In his second seniors final this year, Gatt came up against Andrew Gillett, former no.27 in the world over-35 rankings.

Gatt fought bravely in a tight first set, losing 7-5, but Gillett raised his game in the second to win it 6-1.

In doubles, Gatt teamed up with Michael Haward to see off Rajiv Batra and David King, 6-3 6-4, and set up a final against the no.1 seeds, British duo Charles Durham (ranked 38th in doubles) and Ian Udal (ranked 55th).

The title match was a keen contest with the score tied at 4-4 in the opening set. Then, Gatt and Haward got the crucial break with the Maltese player serving for the first set to clinch it 6-4.

The second set saw Gatt and Haward racing into a 4-0 lead. Durham and Udal staged a reaction to narrow the deficit, 5-3, but Gatt and his partner regained their composure in the next game to secure another break on the way to their first doubles titles on the senior tour.

The title crowned a very positive week for Gatt who has now improved his ITF world ranking to no.103 in singles (up 42 places) and no.51 in doubles, an improvement of 57 positions.

In a statement, Gatt thanked his sponsors, Living Well at the Hilton, for their continuous support.
