Malta is not a member of any coalition led by the United States against the Islamic State.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry said this morning that while it acknowledged that IS was a threat not just to Iraq, Syria and the region but also to the US and Europe, Malta had not signed any agreement or made any commitment to join a coalition.

In international fora, Malta condemned IS and offered moral and political support in the fight against IS’s barbarism and terrorism.

The Foreign Ministry said Malta’s neutrality was aimed at acquiring peace so the country could not be neutral or passive in such circumstances.

Malta also acknowledged its moral obligations to address the humanitarian situation created through IS actions.
