President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca called on Pope Francis in Rome today and officially invited him to visit Malta.

She said that should a visit take place, she would like the Pope to particularly address children and young people with a view to encouraging them to follow the values of their forefathers, particularly friendship, tolerance, love and respect to other people.

He said that with Malta being close to conflict zones, Church statements of love and tolerance of various cultures were important.

The president and her husband presented the Pope with a small round table with a ceramic surface featuring the emblem of the Pope,  Maltese fruit, a box of Maltese soil, Gozo lace and a financial donation to go to the poor.

The Pope presented her with a copy of his encyclical Evangelii Gaudium and a rosary.

The President was interviewed by Rome Reports where she is heard inviting the Pope to Malta to instil love and solidarity.
