The MUMN has declared an industrial dispute at Gozo General Hospital, saying the  Health Department had not acted over a severe shortage of carers to the detriment of the patients and the elderly residents in Ward St Anna.

The shortage, it said, had persisted for some 18 months and was made worse because certain carers were transferred to security duties or other duties without any replacements.

It said there were some 20 vacancies.

The union warned that if, by October 10, carers were not provided, all nurses in Gozo General hospital would stop doing the work of carers and concentrate only on their responsibilities.
