As if it was not enough for Sliema residents to endure several years of inconvenience until a building was erected in Cathedral Street, corner with St Paul Street, now that the project is nearing its end, the structure remains covered with tattered drapes, which are nothing but a sorry excuse to try to cover up the works. Talk about an eyesore in a tourist town!

Smokescreen

A larger ‘no smoking’ sign is needed to the entrance of the tunnel at Malta International Airport. The present sign is either too small to read, or smokers are illiterate, for most staff working at MIA use this spot to cloud this entrance with their smokey exhalations. Non-smokers utilising this entrance are forced to passively smoke with them. At level -1 there is a children’s play room.

Turning a blind eye

This is the street just past the printing press, leading to the Fortina tunnel. Blinkered wardens police this area too.

At a standstill

Works in Msida Road, Santa Venera, started over a month ago but they’ve been at a standstill, with no one working on them, for at least four weeks. One side of the pavement is nearly inaccessible and there’s a childcare centre there (Little Munchkins – wall is painted green) making drop-off and collection of children hard and unsafe.

Stumbling blocks

This was the scene in Republic Street, Valletta, on the evening of September 19: An ambulance with beacon lights on struggled to get through chairs, tables and bulky restaurant menu signs, which seem to hog the capital’s main thoroughfare. Restaurant staff had to rush out to clear out the street furniture. Residents and people who pass at night complain about this matter, as in some areas pushing through a pushchair is also difficult. Where are the enforcement officers?
