Valletta’s view of the Three Cities was almost blocked by five cruise liners early this week, when four chartered Aida ships and the Mein Schiff 2 docked in Grand Harbour on the same day.
The Aida Aura, Aida Blu, Aida Diva and Aida Vita were carrying some 8,000 guests brought together to celebrate the 40th anniversary of German company Deutsche Vermögensberatung (DVAG).
The four ships berthed along Pinto quays. Restaurants and bars along Valletta Waterfront were closed while a massive private party took place.
US superstar Gloria Gaynor, UK singer Kim Wilde, German singer-songwriter Sarah Connor, eurodance group Captain Jack and violinist David Garrett entertained the crowds from a stage built on Laguna Marina.
A full gun salute from the Upper Barrakka Gardens greeted the Aida ships as they arrived on Tuesday, with tug boats spraying jets of water for an unusual display.
A light and pyrotechnic show lit up the skies that evening.
Preparation started three years ago and more than 900 people were involved in what is thought to be one of Malta’s biggest private events.
“We are proud to have hosted this event, which puts our magnificent port, facilities and the Maltese islands in the limelight,” said Valletta Cruise Port CEO Stephen Xuereb.
