Talks between all interested parties in the Libyan conflict will commence in Ghadames, an oasis town to the southwest of Tripoli, tomorrow, the Foreign Ministry said.

It said the talks will be held under the aegis of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and on the initiative of the United Nation Secretary General Special Representative, Bernardino Leon.

On behalf of the Maltese government, the ministry congratulates and offered support to Mr Leon “for his unwavering efforts in bringing all parties in the Libyan conflict to the negotiating table”.

“The opportunity that has presented itself must now be sustained by all the international community.

“Malta strongly appeals to all Libyans, particularly political leaders in Libya, to show maturity and leadership so that the people and country will start their recovery towards progress and development.

“Malta believes that political transition can only be achieved through compromise and understanding,” the ministry said.

The ministry said that Malta continued to be engaged over the Libyan crisis and stood by the friendly and neighbourly Libyan people at this particular moment.

“Malta has kept and continues to keep its embassy open in Tripoli demonstrating solidarity with all Libyans,” the minsitry said.

PN spokesman Carm Mifsud Bonnici welcomed the news and stressed the need for a pacific solution to the conflict.
