Pharmacists reading for a novel postgraduate Doctorate of Pharmacy degree at the University are being offered paid traineeships in areas such as pharmaceutical regulatory affairs, pharmaceutical industry, community pharmacy and medical representation and pharmaceutical senior management positions. This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the University and the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry to facilitate the sponsorship of such trainee opportunities.

The doctorate is an international Level 8 postgraduate programme that enables pharmacists to develop their career further and take up advanced practice and applied pharmacy research.

It is offered by the University in collaboration with the University of Illinois in Chicago, the US. The latter university’s College of Pharmacy ranks among the top 10 schools of pharmacy in the US and is ranked fourth among US colleges of pharmacy in attracting National Institute of Health Research Funding.

The memorandum was signed by University rector Juanito Camilleri, Chamber president David Curmi and Reginald Fava, chairman of the chamber’s Pharmacy Owners Business Section. Fava, a pharmacist and entrepreneur, noted that through the memorandum, candidates undertaking the PharmD course will be helped to sustain their studies through placements in the industry. This is a much needed leap forward in the sector, he said.
